Biodiversity and Ecosystems Quality

This area aims to monitor and enhance the condition of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Research includes the development of cost-efficient technologies for ecosystem evaluation and monitoring, real-time species detection and identification using IoT, impact assessment of supply chains on biodiversity, and the design of nature-based mitigation solutions. It also focuses on quantifying the positive impacts of conservation actions and enhancing electricity grid resilience using digital twins. All these activities make use of IoT, artificial intelligence, and digital twin technologies to deliver innovative environmental solutions. UPM’s work in sustainable forest management integrates complex ecological, economic, and social criteria, reflecting a holistic approach to land-use and ecosystem stewardship.
