UTAD is a global sustainability leader, ranking 41st worldwide for Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) and 7th for Life on Land (SDG 15) in the THE Impact Rankings. It sits within the top 7.5% of universities globally (CWUR- Center for World University Rankings) and was recently awarded the Erasmus+ 2025 Prize. Through the CITAB research centre, UTAD leads international projects on sustainable irrigation and river ecosystem restoration, earning national honours for innovation in water resource management (https://citab.utad.pt/news) .

Research

In the 2025 FCT evaluation, UTAD achieved a major milestone with four Research Units classified as “Excellent”: CITAB, CQ-VR, CIDESD, and CEL. These centres lead innovation in agro-environmental technologies, chemical sustainability, sports science, and linguistics. This recognition reinforces UTAD’s position as a top-tier R&D hub, particularly through CITAB’s global leadership in sustainable water management and climate adaptation.

Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and Equipment

The LEFT – Laboratory of Fluvial and Terrestrial Ecology is a specialized research and service unit at UTAD/CITAB. LEFT’s mission is to contribute to applied and innovative scientific knowledge in the areas of Ecology, Conservation Biology and Environment, supporting scientific research in the fields of monitoring river and terrestrial ecosystems, conservation, ecological and environmental assessment, environmental impact studies, environmental audits and inspections, restoration and renaturation of degraded habitats and ecological modelling.
Support LaboratoryAppClim: AppClim develops R&D on climatology, mostly on climate variability, weather/climate extremes and climate change projections.
